Sterling Archer’s Wild Kingdom

Sterling Archer. Babu the Ocelot. That's all you really need to know.

- Season 3, Episode 6 - "The Limited"

This week’s Archer taught me one thing: Sterling Archer might not always be a competent ISIS agent, but he’d be a pretty awesome host for a nature show.

Think about this for a second. “The Limited” gave us plenty of examples of how he’s not the brightest bulb in the spy chandelier, whether it was showing up drunk to transport a prisoner (because he’d thought they were leaving much later) or breaking out a live grenade to settle a Mexican standoff. Sometimes — a lot of times — Archer is a health hazard.

However, we also got to see Archer spending some more quality time with Cheryl/Carol’s pet ocelot, Babu. Ever since they met last season, Archer thinks that Babu loves him. This is not the case. Babu would rather rip his face off. So while Archer was distressed by Babu’s escape (so much so that he was willing to wander the halls of the train with a raw steak), when he did find the ocelot, he ended up being mauled. And then he ended up in the back of a police car, up on charges, with the ocelot as a traveling companion.

Watching the exchange (if one could call it that) between Archer and Babu was pretty funny. Here’s Archer yelling at the ocelot like he thinks it’s capable of understanding him, and it’s just making all sorts of noises and then spraying the police car. There’s something about it that’s so random, it’s funny. I could see Babu as Archer’s new sidekick. (Hey, if Tom Hanks can partner with a dog, why not?)

But I can only imagine how Archer would fare if this gag extended to other animals, something like Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. Here’s Archer being impressed by a giant snake … only to be bitten by it. Here’s Archer and the inevitable gator that will scare the crap out of him (remember “Pipeline Fever”?). It would be a trainwreck, but not much worse than anything else we’ve already seen on Archer.

Do you have a favorite Archer screw-up? (You should have no shortage of options.) Sound off below.
