The Vampire Diaries – Are you rooting for Stefan or Damon?

It seems that the Salvatore brothers are either endlessly flawed, or they think they are. The first one to stop beating himself up is a rotten egg ... and probably the one that will win Elena's heart.

- Season 3, Episode 15 - "All My Children"

“It’s for the best. I’m better at being the bad guy anyway.” – Damon, about Elena not falling for him

One thing can be said for The Vampire Diaries: they do not endlessly drag on a storyline! Esther’s whole spell plot certainly came to a head and an ending much more quickly than I thought it would. It leaves me feeling a little bit empty that it was all wrapped up in one episode. I was ready to see a bit more of the original family together in Mystic Falls … though not much more. So many of them would detract from the more important storylines of the show, so I definitely see why the writers made the choice they did. I would have liked Kol and Finn to be slightly less two-dimensional, though, and for that we needed more time.

Now, do you think Esther and Finn are gone, as in left the premises, or did the spell fail and kill them somehow? It seems rather open, and I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Esther, although Mikael’s short-lived appearance was a might bit disappointing. The same could be in store for Esther, which would be too bad.

I’m enjoying the dynamics between Elena and Elijah. Julie Plec had mentioned they were going to play up on the actors’ natural chemistry with one another (and she says a lot more in the interview Carla posted with her last night). Elijah has such a presence. Last season, I thought he was so dull compared to Klaus, but now I see a strength and honor in him that is beginning to outshine the glitz of brother Nick: “Mother made us vampires; she didn’t make us monsters. We did that to ourselves.” I am just going to assume Elijah’s sticking around so I don’t have to be disappointed. So there.

So Stefan’s not drinking human blood, and hasn’t been since the night he threatened Elena at the bridge. Interesting. We’ve seen glimpses of the old Stefan coming back in the last few episodes, but he still doesn’t feel worthy of Elena. Will he ever? And Damon, still sacrificing for Stefan, this time by being the one to turn Abby. He’s like a martyr, but an evil martyr — is that even possible? Why is it easier for Damon to sabotage himself in the long run, or even in many of the short runs, for that matter? Can either of these two be the man Elena needs?

Why did Meredith seemingly shoot Alaric? First of all, it is ridiculous how many times that poor man has been injured this season, so I really hope he doesn’t have to heal from a broken rib and a gunshot wound. Secondly, is she really our serial killer? Too easy and too obvious! I want more intrigue! Although, if they give us a good backstory and motive, I’ll likely be on board. I never liked her as a love interest for Alaric anyway. No chemistry. It certainly made for a good gasp at the end of the episode though!

This and that:

  • We haven’t seen hide nor hair of the actual diaries of The Vampire Diaries in a long time … it was ind of nice to see a glimpse of Stefan’s tonight.
  • That beautiful song at the beginning of the episode was Poison & Wine by The Civil Wars.
  • Rebekah looks like Miss Piggy, especially in her formal attire.
  • “Why do you look like someone shot a panda bear?” – Damon
  • “Just to be clear, I’m too smart to be seduced by you.” – Caroline
    “That’s why I like you.” – Klaus
  • Why was Klaus not effected to the same extent as his siblings when Kol was daggered? Is it because he’s a hybrid?
  • What will be the  fallout of Abby being a vampire?
  • Do you think Esther and Finn have fled to the white oak tree sapling? That would be fun.
