In Plain Sight – Mary became a mother

'In Plain Sight' returns for its final season. How will Mary handle a new baby and her job?

- Season 5, Episode 1 - "The Anti-Social Network"

When we last saw Mary Shannon, she had just killed a man to protect her team, her sister had ditched out on the wedding, and she went into labor … just a few cliffhangers to ponder over the break.

Instead of picking up right where the show left off, In Plain Sight started off season five with a six month time jump. Phew! There was no doubt that Mary was going to keep her baby and not give her up for adoption. Mary’s indecision and procrastination about the adoption were a clear sign of that, but the decision to not show her give birth worked out perfectly.

The flashbacks provided enough of the story to get a good, honest feeling about what Mary was going through. She gave birth with the people she cared about with her. And, instead of watching the excrutiating decision about keeping her daughter, we got to see the precious moment when she named her Norah.

Mary being Mary showed up to work a day before her maternity leave ended. She has always been on her own schedule. (By the way, aren’t you glad we didn’t have to watch six months of maternity leave? That is a show I wouldn’t have wanted to watch.) Things at the office had changed and Mary doesn’t like change.

Did Norah mellow her out a bit? I expected a huge rant about Delia using her desk. Instead Mary was upset, but let it go … for now. Could we be in for an improved Mary? It seems like we might. It was funny to see that she still wanted in on the Stan gossip.

As much as I didn’t like Mark and was upset that he was the father, so far, he isn’t too bad. His decision to move to be there for Mary and Norah was honorable. I just hope that Mary doesn’t hook up with Mark. He is not the guy for her. She would be better off single with Norah then getting back together with Mark. Though, of course, I hope she finds love.

The premiere was a nice start to the last season of In Plain Sight. I’m sad to see the show end, but in a way it is time. My only complaint with the return is that Brandi is back to causing trouble. I wasn’t happy about the decision to have her ditch the wedding and I’m even more unhappy with the drinking storyline. While she had troubles in the past, both felt out of character for the Brandi that she had become. But, I guess the writers decided they needed to go that direction.

I’ve never really thought about Mary and Marshall getting together, but I know there are fans of them getting together. Do you think the show should end with them together? Should Marshall ditch his cop girlfriend and their dog to be with Mary?

Mary and Marshall make a perfect work marriage, but I don’t see them falling in love and getting married.
