Thanks to everyone who has commented on my One Tree Hill Virgin Diary so far! I have come to realize that this show has meant a lot to many people. I hope you’ll continue with me as I watch the seasons.
Right now I’m up to Episode 18 in Season 2 (“The Lonesome Road”). A lot has been happening in each episode. In fact, I felt that Episode 16 (“Somewhere A Clock Is Ticking”) could have, maybe even should have, been the season finale. We had a wedding — which didn’t end up happening due to Jules/Emily’s secret being revealed. Brooke’s family informs her that she will be moving. And douchey Chris fakes being a couple on TV with Haley during their interview, which Nathan watches. It could have all been a great ending to a great season.
But then, they give us more! And it is a lot more. Throughout the season it is slowly revealed that Anna is in fact bisexual (although she does alternate between saying “gay” and “bisexual”). I think maybe she thinks she is bisexual at first but as she gets more comfortable with her friends knowing, she admits that she really likes girls. It was cute how her old flame Darby (Sprague Grayden, whom I recognized from Six Feet Under) came to visit. While I anticipated Anna being a bit ashamed of Darby in front of her friends, she surprised me by introducing her to Lucas as the girl from her old school who she told him about. That was a nice twist, because usually in shows like these, the characters have to have some difficulty with admitting their relationship to others and it causes a rift in a relationship when one member is more “out” than the other. Instead, One Tree Hill made Anna brave. I appreciated that.
And I guess we’re not going to be seeing Anna or Felix anymore. Felix was the most confusing character on the show to me thus far. I never liked him, although he showed some promise in the middle there while with Brooke. But he was never really a nice guy, nor was he honest, nor was he mature. He’s pretty much a pansy whose defensive mechanism is being an ass when he is uncomfortable. I’m glad Anna came to Peyton with the news that Felix was the one who tagged “Dyke” on her locker. And I’m doubly glad that Brooke told him off on the spot once she found out.
And I was right about Jules being shady! I had a feeling that Dan would be involved. One of the scenes that struck me (I believe it was the last scene of Episode 16) was when he flicked over the male figurine on top of the wedding cake and said, “One down … one to go.” Deb was in the background, so I’m taking it he meant she was the next one on his list to bring down.
What’s more is that we found out that Lucas has an ulterior motive for staying with Dan. Aside from Dan paying for his medication and keeping the Jules secret over his head, Lucas’ narration mentioned wanting to stay nearer to Dan so he could basically destroy him. When Dan gives Lucas The Memoirs Of Sherlock Holmes, and then (according to Lucas) misinterprets an important part of the book, Lucas shoots back with his reading of the same event — that Sherlock sacrificed his own life to ensure another man’s demise. Just so, Lucas is staying with Dan and “playing his game” so that he can get close enough to finally bring his father down. Dan is a smart man, and I think he knows what Lucas is up to. Whether or not he cares is the question. Because Dan Scott probably thinks he can outwit just about anyone, manipulating them until things go his own way. He installed security cameras to keep an eye on “things,” meaning Lucas, probably. Lucas is just going to find another way to uncover Dan’s evil doings.
The storyline with Jake, Peyton, Niki, and baby Jenny is kind of scary. Even though Niki is, by anyone’s standards, an unfit mother, the truth is that Jake has been “in hiding” and “on the run” with his daughter after missing a court date. (I’m assuming this court date is something Jake was never notified of.) Is Niki telling the truth — is Jenny not really Jake’s? This may be a ploy to get Jake to back off, but of course, now he’s invested in Jenny and loves her, so whether or not he is her biological father doesn’t matter so much in his eyes.
Finally, the scene in which Jake is arrested, Peyton’s house is searched, and Whitey drives away with Jenny in the back seat — that gave me the chills. It made me think back to the time-capsule episode (“Unopened Letter to the World”), when we find out that Whitey is the student from the ’50s who left a message about his love interest, Camilla (Whitey’s wife who passed away). In the video clip, he talks about having kids someday. That’s probably one of the reasons he helped Jake. But how dangerous! Whitey could also get into serious trouble if he is found out.
I am truly annoyed by the Haley/Nathan story right now. Haley needs to be up front with Nathan. Either she should tell him she wants a divorce and continue to pursue her music career, or she should make it a point to tell him that she wants to be with him and make sure she returns right after the tour — or sooner.
When Nathan went to visit her in New York, I was hopeful for the two of them. But instead of being decisive, she’s again flaky and unsure (taking off the wedding ring is one example, but it’s really her attitude toward him in general). I know that he said that if she left, they were done, which is probably why she’s trying to move on. But his grand gesture of coming to see her should have made her realize that he was going to try to make their marriage work. The fact that she reacted the way she did is a sign to me that she’s not ready to do the same.
I was on the edge of my seat during the scene where Nathan drives away and you see him in the car with his wedding ring off, and Haley in the dressing room. I thought a really great way for that scene to end would have been for Haley to put the ring back on at the same time that Nathan threw his out of the car. But instead, they both just put their rings down, which says to me that it’s not over.
