Suits – Difficult decisions are made

Mike finally got Rachel's message, but then he sent one of his own to her. What will happen to their relationship now? And, how about Jessica and Harvey? Will she be able to overcome his betrayal?

- Season 2, Episode 2 - "The Choice"

I just cannot get enough of Suits. I’m addicted. I watched the season two premiere more times than I care to admit, as well as, this episode. Suits has a wit about it that is unique and holds up over multiple viewings. The fast pasted dialogue and banter only get better upon multiple viewings.

While Suits takes place around the law firm, Pearson Hardman, it is just the playground for these dynamic characters to play on. “The Choice” was the perfect title for this episode. Each person had an important choice to make … did they each make the right one?

Let’s get the heartbreak out of the way first. When Mike walked into the law firm and planted a big kiss on Rachel, I cheered! It was romantic beyond words. Who would have thought, “I got your message.” could carry so much meaning? Unfortunately, that phrase led to heartbreak as well.

I can’t decide if I feel sorry for Mike or if he got what he deserved. Harvey was right. Mike couldn’t tell Rachel, but not only because she could use it against him in the future. Rachel never would have accepted the truth. She would have pushed him away. There is no way that she would have stood by him knowing that he wasn’t a credentialed lawyer. She may not have outed him, but she wouldn’t have remained in a relationship with him.

She couldn’t stand knowing that he got away with it, when she can’t even get up the courage to take and pass the LSATs to get into law school. But, despite that, Harvey had a point. Mike told his secret to his best friend and look where that got him. Mike may be book smart, but not nearly as smart when it comes to relationships. In the end, though, Mike made the right decision by cutting short his romance with Rachel.

When he sees her at the elevator, my heart ached for both of them. Fortunately, they are meant for each other. It’s true love, so this won’t be the last we will see of them together. Mike could always make a grand jesture and quit the firm to be with her … or not.

While Mike followed Harvey’s advice demand, Harvey went against Jessica and it cost them both. Harvey and Jessica’s relationship has never been very clear. She helped him become the lawyer that he is, but he has constantly gone against her wishes. Why does she put up with him? It’s because usually in the end, he comes out ahead. But, not this time.

Harvey’s pride got in the way. He had to best Paul, rather than court him by assisting on the case. Did Harvey do the right thing for the client? Perhaps, but it came at a great personal and professional cost. Jessica’s trust in Harvey has been decimated with his betrayals. And, he put Jessica’s (and his) interest in the firm at risk. I can’t wait to see how Harvey goes about mending his relationship with her. Getting the tea set back was just the beginning.

The war is coming.

Odds and Ends

  • Louis decided not to leave the firm. Did Hardman’s gift of a dictophone and Jessica’s brush-off push him to Hardman’s side?
  • Love Donna! How awesome was she with Louis? She has him whipped. And, he knows it, but can’t help himself.
  • Who was the woman at Harvey’s place? A romp in the sack or is he in a relationship?
  • Donna and Harvey? Hmm … interesting. While I’d love to get the story on what happened, I kinda like not knowing. It didn’t pan out and it isn’t going anywhere now, so what difference does it make.
  • Poor Donna! She is the keeper of all the secrets. It must be difficult for her now that she is friends with Rachel. But, she did the right thing by convincing Mike to let Rachel go.

  • Mike: Oh, great, you’re an international man of mystery, but I’m not you. I want a personal life. And, I don’t want to be a liar. I’m going to tell Rachel everything.
    Harvey: No, you’re not.
  • Harvey: You want to take down the firm, Mike? So you can get laid?

    Donna: It’s possible.
