Lost Virgin Diary – The island giveth, and the island can also taketh away

‘Lost’ madness is taking a heavy grip on me. I finally watched the infamous Numbers episode I’ve been hearing so much about. Do the numbers live up to the hype? Join me in more clue analysis in my Virgin Diary this week.

Join me for another Virgin Diary entry on my favorite stranded castaways, from Episode 12 “Special” through “Exodus Part I & II.” That’s right – I finished Lost’s Season 1 and is my head ever spinning about the possibilities that lie ahead!

From the pages of Claire’s diary:
Today I realized I really like Charlie. There’s something about him that’s just so adorable and sweet. Even in a scary place like this, Charlie makes me feel safe.

The schoolboy expressions on Charlie’s face as he read Claire’s diary to see if the girl he was crushing on was crushing on him back were simply adorable. I don’t care what mistakes Charlie may have made in the past during his junkie days. No matter what he did, from stealing to lying to sleeping around, there is such a sad sweetness to him that I can’t help but be drawn to him. I understand why he killed Ethan to protect Claire, but by killing him, it appears I won’t get my questions answered about him any time soon.

I’m also left wondering whether the small plane crash with what appears to be massive amounts of heroin on the island is going to be Charlie’s downfall or not. We saw one of the religious statues the smugglers hid the heroin in concealed in his backpack, so the writers have at least made it look like he’s holding again. I just hope he’s strong enough to stay clean because that’s really what Claire and little “Turnip Head” need if he’s going to continue trying to be there for them. (Sighs)

While certainly not the first death on the island, the death of Boone was a real turning point in the series for me. It proved that I’m emotionally vested in this group of survivors and what fate has in store for them. My instincts tell me it was probably the first of many deaths to follow and I wept at the possibilities (literally wept, tissues in hand). My emotions built to a crescendo as Jack frantically donated blood and considered chopping off Boone’s leg to try and save his life.

As soon as I saw Claire was delivering her baby at the same moment, I knew Boone was a goner. There is no greater paradox than one life entering this world as another one burns out. The following scenes showing the survivors gathering around Claire and the baby on the beach as Shannon came strolling back happily with Sayid from their romantic night together and the look on Jack’s face as he had to break the news to her about her brother – wow!

Many of the survivors are now feeling like they were brought to the island as a form of punishment for past misdeeds – all the collective lies they’ve told, the secrets they’ve kept and are continuing to keep from one another, all the bad decisions and crimes against humanity that some of them are responsible for. All season-long, I’ve been so focused upon discovering who could be responsible for the plane crash (ranging from mental abilities to covert operations to someone being a jinx) and where they are that I think I’ve been focusing upon the wrong questions entirely.

Kim, I just love that you are moving right along. It is so much fun to read your musings!

“The island giveth, the island taketh away”…That’s a good direction, start attributing will and purpose to the island. It’ll save you a lot of grief wondering about “who caused things to happen”. And get used to unexplained magic, too.

If you like Sawyer with glasses, I have good news for you when you get to Season 5.

“Will Kate wind up with Jack or Sawyer?” Don’t invest a lot in this question–it only leads to disappointment.

As far as getting attached to characters, I found that by the end of the show, two of the characters I cared the most about weren’t even in Season 1. So there’s some very good stuff to come!

Have fun with the first minutes of the first episode of Season 2! That’s probably my favorite WTF in the whole series, and the most fun.

I’m about 4 episodes into Season 2 now, and I’m not sure what to think about what’s been happening inside the hatch with the science lab, Desmond and the whole thing about pushing the button every 108 minutes or the world would explode! And yes, those first few minutes of seeing Desmond doing his daily routine under the hatch were certainly eye-opening! At first I thought it was just another character flashback sequence lol.

Thanks for letting me know more good characters are on their way :)

Oh, and I guess I can handle some unexplained magic too, I love the mysterious and the unexplained!
