True Blood – An old enemy returns

Russell Edgington is back, and all is right in the world of "True Blood." A lot of other stuff happened too, and, oh, and a war between humans and supernaturals may be shaping up.

- Season 5, Episode 5 - "Let's Boot and Rally"

It’s been teased for weeks, and True Blood has finally delivered: Russell Edgington is back! Even though it’s only a few moments at the end of the episode, his return is glorious. Even sick in bed, he brings the snark. I can’t wait to see what craziness ensues.

I have to say that everything leading up to Bill, Eric, and the gang finding him was pretty good, from Sookie puking on Alcide’s shoes to the scary asylum (which Sookie rightly compares to a horror movie). It was kind of like a grown-up version of the Scooby gang, what with all the flashlights. They even had a resident coward like Shaggy thanks to Doug. Poor Doug: he didn’t ask for any of this. Earlier in the season, I was glad that Sookie and Eric and Bill were split up for a while, but I didn’t mind their reuniting here.

That said, I don’t know what this will mean for Snookcide, or Alkie, or whatever the kids are calling it. They didn’t quite get to consummating their relationship. I think Alcide may still want to after this, but how will Sookie feel when she’s sober? I like the new sassy Sookie who decides to accept her fate as a magnet for bad supernatural crap, though. And I’d like to see her with Alcide for a while, if not forever, but who knows what the show has planned for them?

The end of the episode, with the Guardian’s speech and Jason visiting his parents’ graves, seems to imply that the show is heading towards some big battle between humans and “supes.” I think this would be an awesome way to integrate many of the show’s plots … which seems like an impossible task otherwise, and perhaps one that the show doesn’t even care about taking on. I think Jason investigating his parents’ deaths could be interesting, but beyond that … meh. I am not feeling the Vampire Authority stuff, either. Give us more screen time for Russell!

Notes and Quotes:

  • Just as I prefer Sassy Sookie, I think I am starting to prefer Vamp Tara. It’s not hard to prefer anything over old Tara, though. Rutina Wesley seems to be having fun, and I like that the character may revel in her power after a long time of feeling powerless. Speaking of which, I don’t know what’s happening to poor Lafayette, but I don’t like it very much. Give him a break, show!
  • Still don’t care about Terry’s plot, even now that it’s supernatural, but Todd Lowe portrays Terry’s anguish well. Really don’t care about shifters dying unless it plays into the whole war between the humans and supes angle.
  • Jessica gives Tara an “It gets better speech,” showing that the show is not yet beyond clunky comparisons between vampirism and homosexuality. That said, I hope they can be friends despite the Hoyt stuff. Tara needs a friend, and so does Jess in some ways.
  • Alicde: “I’ve waited so long for this.”
    Sookie: *yak*
Eric, walking in on them: “Alcide, you sure know how to treat a lady.”
  • Jason, after waking up naked, under his breath “Fuckin’ fairies.”
  • Sookie: “A three thousand year old vampire wants to suck my blood — must be Thursday!”
  • Pam, to Tara: “I saved your fucking life and lent you some truly exquisite clothes, but if you do anything to mess with Fangtasia, I will silver you and stick you in a coffin to rot until the next millennium.”
  • Andy, picking Holly over the fairies: “I don’t care if those ladies are faeries or leprechauns or freaking Ewoks.”
  • Sookie: “I’ve seen enough horror movies to know that you don’t split up when you’re in a big, scary asylum and there’s a crazed killer on the loose.”
  • Bill, in Russell’s lair: “A morgue. How convenient”
  • Russell, when everyone arrives: “Took you long enough.”
