Burn Notice – An enemy becomes an ally

Anson’s crony Rebecca is back on this week’s Burn Notice, this time to kidnap Sam. You know, just because Michael needed his life to be a little more difficult right now. That was probably Anson’s reasoning, right? Sam was kidnapped while the gang was trying to investigate who is after Fiona, so it’s safe to say that Anson has his finger in that pie as well. Sam and Rebecca have a fun adversarial relationship, and since everything tied in with the Fiona plot, I found this to be one of the better episodes of the young season.

Every week, Anson is revealed to be more and more of a monster. Rebecca, despite her “barracuda eyes,” hates Anson just as much as Michael does — he knows where her lost brother is and is holding the information over her head. It seems that even when he’s not on screen, Anson can pull everyone’s strings. I have to wonder if this new alliance with Rebecca will escape Anson’s notice long enough for it to work.

Meanwhile, the stuff with Fi in prison is pretty standard as far as prison plots go, but Gabrielle Anwar is getting some good scenes to play. Her terror of “The Sisters” is palpable, and it’s all the more effective because we are not used to seeing ex-IRA badass Fiona terrified of anything. She, too, creates an uneasy alliance this episode with Ann, the woman on the inside who can get stuff. Thanks to that alliance, she keeps herself alive, but it’s probably only a matter of time before The Sisters — or someone else — try to kill her again. This lends Michael and company’s stories on the outside a lot more urgency than they usually have, and I for one am enjoying the increased stakes this season.

• I really did enjoy Sam and Rebecca’s road trip from hell.
• Maddie was very brave to go to Ann’s ex’s apartment alone. You can really tell where Michael gets his steel from.
• The show had its usual signature car chases this week, but the boat chase was new. Too bad Rebecca wasn’t in her boat!
• Maddie to Michael: “That may be the most evasive answer you have ever given me. And you can be pretty evasive.”
• Micheal v.o.: “It’s hard to interrogate your target if he’s dealing with a gun shot wound. Of course, it’s even harder if he’s dead.”
• Michael v.o.: “When you’re kidnapped at gun point, it’s best to approach it like a blind date. You want to be an active listener, you want to stay positive, and you want to make a connection.”
• Guy in the trunk, about Rebecca: “She wanted to kill me. I could tell. Wasn’t nothing behind those eyes. Like a barracuda.”
• Rebecca to Sam: “Is this the part where you tell me deep down inside I’m a Girl Scout?”
• Ann: “The catch is my ex. Winnner of the Biggest Bastard in Florida forty years running.”
• Rebecca, after pretending to be Sam’s wife: “You know the problem with our relationship? I hate your friends.”
• Jesse, about Rebecca: “Well, the good news is we got her cornered in the world’s biggest swamp.”
• Sam: “Thank God she didn’t hit my chin.”
• Rebecca to Michael: “I wasn’t gonna detonate it till you got a little closer. Get a little closer.”
