Ratings Clack – The Syfy summer officially kicks off

With nothing too exciting happening on the networks, the biggest news this week was on cable, where Syfy premiered 'Warehouse 13,' 'Eureka,' and 'Haven.' Spoiler: They're all going to spend the summer being hammered by 'Pawn Stars.'

NBC - The holiday made for a slow start to the week, but NBC topped the demo with Macy’s 4th of July (6.92m/1.4). Monday was slow as well, with Persons Unknown (2.96m/.8) continuing to struggle, and Last Comic Standing (4.41m/1.8) seeing small gains. The good news, as always, came Tuesday. Losing It With Jillian (3.9m/1.2) still isn’t finding any traction, but America’s Got Talent (11.82m/3.4) is a summer hit. Another episode on Wednesday (11.95m/3.4) also did well, and was paired with a solid outing from Minute To Win It (6.97m/2.1). Friday Night Lights (3.66m/1) wrapped things up.

ABC - The Bachelorette (9.15m/2.8) is cruising right through the summer, with results that are promising another cycle next year I would guess. True Beauty (4.85m/1.7) hasn’t been as successful. The Tuesday edition of Wipeout (8.76m/3) bounced back from a down week, but Downfall (3.63m/1.2) continued to fall despite the better lead-in. Thursday’s Wipeout (7.89m/2.4) wasn’t quite as strong, but Rookie Blue (6.22m/1.5) looked much better following it. Not great numbers, but it’s holding up well. Boston Med (4.93m/1.1) continues to drop.

CBS - After kicking the week off with Boston Pops Fireworks (6.73m/.9) the real CBS summer plan got underway on Thursday with the return of Big Brother (7.35m/2.5). Friday brought two new episodes of Flashpoint (5.81m/1.1 – 6.1m/1.2). And in a bizarre bit of scheduling, the network premiered another Canadian import, The Bridge (2.98m/.5) on Saturday. It would seem the show might have been better served following Flashpoint on Friday.

FOX - Sons Of Tuscon (1.09m/.5) continued it’s run toward sub-million viewer numbers to start the week off. With four episodes to go, I think it has a real shot at getting there. Reality made up the rest of the week. Hell’s Kitchen (6.6m/3.1 – 7.2m/3.3) continues to put up solid numbers. While not quite up to the douchebag chef, So You Think You Can Dance did see small gains on both Wednesday (6.3m/2.3) and Thursday (6.17m/2.1).

CABLE - The Syfy summer has officially started with the premieres of Warehouse 13 (2.96m/1), Eureka, and Haven. Those Warehouse 13 numbers are off the pace from where the show started last season. It will be interesting to see what happens as we get a few episodes into the latest adventure. No numbers for Eureka and Haven yet, but I’m very curious to see how they stack up against Caprica and SGU.

UPDATE: Numbers for Eureka (2.52m/.8) and Haven (2.34m/.7) have both of them garnering more viewers than Caprica or SGU, but these are the premieres. We’ll have to wait and see how things shake out.

Other cable numbers this week:

  • Secret Life Of The American Teen (2.99m/1.2)
  • Make It Or Break It (1.72m/.6)
  • Pretty Little Liars (2.62m/1)
  • Hawthorne (2.73m/.8)
  • Memphis Beat (3.6m/.8)
  • Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2.99m/.8)
  • Hot In Cleveland (2.94m/.8)
  • Spongebob Squarepants (5.18m/.9)
  • American Pickers (5.01m/1.7)
  • Pawn Stars (6.34m/2.5 – 6.14m/2.4)
  • Deadliest Catch (5.27m/2.4)
  • The Hills (1.98m/1.2)
  • Top Chef (2.58m/1.2)
  • Tosh.0 (2.41m/1.4)
  • Mythbusters (1.27m/.5)

I’m curious about the Syfy numbers as well.

The Pawn Star numbers don’t surprise me, I really enjoy the show.

The Syfy numbers should be out later today. I’ll update the post this afternoon for Eureka and Haven.

I was surprised by the Pawn Stars numbers initially, but not any longer. They’ve really found their groove with the show. I think you can draw a parallel with Deadliest Catch as far as the success of the show. Both are successful, in large part, because they’ve been put together with a great cast of characters.

Brett: Do you think the better numbers are due to timing or content?

Not bashing it, but, Eureka never did anything for me, and I did not even give Haven a chance.

Caprica has great potential and SGU, after a shaky start has become one of my current favorites, especially since I’m getting caught up on the Stargate SG1 (I’m on season 4 and LOVING it, especially the Replicators and Window time loop episodes).

I do think the crew of SG1 would have had the Destiny mastered by now. They’d be hanging out on the Lido deck they discovered, going down water slides and sipping alien tasty beverages. There is really no competition for who is the better and more likable crew.

With Eureka, I think it is the content. It’s just a more approachable show than either Caprica or SGU, so it is going to draw in more viewers. Much like what you see with Warehouse 13. That’s an idea that explains a lot about the rebranding, and the recent programming choices at Syfy.

You could make the argument that Eureka has the benefit of less competition in the summer, but I don’t think there is really that much competition on Fridays during the regular season either, and the difference is probably more than made up for by the fact that people just watch less TV in the summer.

With Haven, at least so far, I think it has more to do with the fact that it’s the premiere of a new show. Eureka has a proven track record, but we’re only just learning about Haven. So I would expect Eureka to stay near these numbers, but Haven could really go either way depending on how it develops.
