We are Charlie Brown to HIMYM’s Lucy

The produces of 'How I Met Your Mother' have promises to keep. The episode that was supposed to start the story of how, in fact, Ted actually meets the mother just left me wanting.

- Season 6, Episode 1 - "Big Days"

“Oh, good grief!” was pretty much my reaction to the premiere of How I Met Your Mother. Brett had pretty much said the same thing to me the other day when I sat down to screen the episode. How many times am I going to run up to that football before producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas pull it away at the last second? If you believe the this summer’s hype, this is the season that the show gets back to its roots. Whether or not that means we meet the titular mother is up for interpretation, but I know what most fans of the show have in mind. It is time to get this show on the road, people!

If we take the events of the final scene literally, it means that Ted will meet the mother at this wedding. Where he’s the best man. And Marshall is a groomsman. And Lily and Robin are (I think) bridesmaids. I’m left with a few scenarios in my head: First, Cindy eventually really calls dibs on the girl from the bar, making an honest woman out of her, and asks Ted to step up. This would require a lot more Cindy this season to justify the rest of the gang’s importance at the wedding, and I’ve not heard that Rachel Bilson is going to be around that much this season.

The other scenarios involve the only two single men in Ted’s life that I can even begin to believe that Ted would stand up for. His dad getting married is an interesting scenario, one that I can actually see happening this season. Explain to me, though, how Cindy’s roommate ends up and Ted’s father’s wedding? The other scenario involves the words “groom” and “Barney” in the same sentence, so, to steal one of his turns of phrase, “Dorv … please.” Barney’s wedding, though, is one of the only scenarios that explains his absence in those scenes, and a role for everyone in the ceremony.

If you believe the big casting rumor/spoiler out there (cough, cough wrong choice, cough, cough), we could potentially meet the mother this season. I truly don’t know anymore. At this point, I’m wondering if we might see Charlie Brown kick a football first.

Notes & Quotes

  • It was hard not to giggle at Marshall’s enthusiasm over the beginning of the baby making process … “Can you dig it?” indeed.
  • I’m wondering, considering her role on Nikita, how much Lindsy Fonseca will be around this season.
  • I have what I think is a fairly unlikely theory about Robin I keep planning on sharing, but every time she and Barney share a scene, I lose faith in it.
  • “You are spitting on the grave of Sir Walter Dibs, the inventor of the dibs.” – Barney
  • “If I had my dad’s number I’d never not be on the phone with him.” – Barney
  • For the record, High-Sixing is, in fact, very lame.
  • “You didn’t happen to bring an umbrella, did you?” – Marshall
“No, I didn’t bring an umbrella.” – Ted

I guess you are going to irritate a couple of readers with that “Dorv… please”.

The umbrella mention again. I noticed that.
