Ted Mosby, Architect … of Destruction

The titular mother of 'How I Met Your Mother' is a bit like Moby-Dick ... But in this case we do know Ted will eventually catch his whale. The question is if any of us will be alive to see it.

- Season 6, Episode 5 - "Architect of Destruction"

All summer long, How I Met Your Mother producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have been talking about how this season of their sitcom was going to be different. The “third act” of the overall story starts now, and other such hyperbole. So far, all we’ve been given is the runaround (though, admittedly, we’re getting more of the runaround). Tonight’s debut of Jennifer Morrison as Zoe was reportedly going to set up a significant character … but one that would apparently have to overcome a husband before becoming a mother.

I don’t know if Zoe is going to eventually be the mother. In fact, I’m pretty sure I’m on the record last season with my opinion that finding out who the mother is isn’t necessarily high on my priority list. However, if you’re going to tell that particular story, then get on with it. In my former life as a Bones reviewer, another opinion pretty solidly on the record is that I’m tired of seeing the cat and mouse game of destined couples actually getting together.

If, by chance, Zoe is actually the mother of our dreams (OK, of Ted’s dreams), then we finally have heard the actual story of how Ted met the titular mother. And mistaking her for a drag queen is one of those stories that would never be told around the Thanks-(slaps)-giving table in most houses. However, considering the path we’ve taken as old-Ted tells the tale, I’m far from surprised.

Talk about a world of male to female double standards. It was just a couple of weeks ago that Lily was all levels of pissed at Marshall for talking to his dad about starting a family. But now it comes out that Lily shares a great many details with Robin that her husband probably wouldn’t want coming out. On that note, you can count me in the club that knows that women do a lot more talking abut the bedroom than men do.

Notes & Quotes

  • “Working together is going to be legen … wait for it … I’ll send you an inter-office memo with the rest because we freaking work together!” – Barney … Only made better moments later when Ted received a memo with “… dary!”
  • “I love that guy. Max is both his name, and his level of awesomeness.” – Marshal
  • “And this theory [new is always better] applies to everything?” – Ted
    “Yeah.” – Barney
“So those new Star Wars movies …  those are better than the old ones?” – Ted
“Yeah, the first three barely mentioned the intricacies of intergalactic trade law.” – Barney
“So when you’re at a Guns and Roses concert, you’re like ‘yeah yeah Paradise City … whatever, when are they going to rock me some Chinese Democracy?” – Ted
“Axel really has matured as a songwriter, Ted.” – Barney
  • “Women talk about everything. Size, shape, left or right leaning orientation.” – Lily
“Length, resemblance to historical figures such as Winston Churchill … Yes, that’s one of you two.” – Robin to Barney and Ted
  • “Impossible … Max’s penis is stuck in my brain like a splinter … like a splinter-sized splinter!” – Marshal
  • Good to see that Barney/NPH has upgraded to the iPhone 4.
  • “You want to know what it’s like in a men’s locker room? Just a bunch of uncomfortable dudes trying to get out of there as quickly as possible … and one old guy letting it all hang out.” – Marshall
  • “Oh, that argument has no traction at all.” – Robin
  • Oh yeah, Barney definitely named the rabbit.
  • The Sex and the City bit was cute, but I doubt any of those characters would have referenced Steinbeck.
  • Snakes? I don’t recall saying snakes.
