Lost Virgin Diary – Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see

What strikes me as clever this week are a tattoo and a reference to a John Lennon lyric, which I believe is a metaphor for everything about ‘Lost’: "Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see." Am I misunderstanding the clues, the survivors or a little bit of both?

I’m really beginning to fall for Charlie … (sigh). His story about how he was all about the music, and his older brother was all about the groupies and drugs, and then the tables reversed really made me quite sad. I was so proud of him when he tossed his heroin in the fire, choosing to become sober without waiting for his stash to run out. He emerged and set himself free like the moth in the cave. The way he’d been looking out for the pregnant Claire was also adorable. When he brought her imaginary peanut butter, his performance was so convincing that I had to root around in my kitchen for my own jar of peanut butter and some bananas. I’m that impressionable when it comes to snacking I guess (ha). I can’t wait for Charlie to finally be reunited with Claire and her baby (as the photos I’ve seen online seem to indicate).

It was Locke who made Jack understand that he needed to be a better leader for the group by telling him the other survivors all see Jack as their leader, but “a leader can’t lead until he knows where he’s going.” I loved it when Jack finally stepped up to the plate and did what it felt like was his destiny to do all along – he took better charge of the survivors, urging them to organize themselves and move to the caves so they have a better chance for survival. However, I have a bad feeling about there being two camps and more division growing day by day.

I can’t make up my mind about Locke – is he still in full charge of his ship or is he running out of mental steam? I found how obsessed he is with the hatch and how he tied up Boone very odd. I still think Locke is the one person who is so attuned with everything around them that he may actually find a way off the island, but sometimes he scares me. I have a bad feeling about his destiny.

Another song lyric I’ve been over-analyzing that also came from Charlie’s story in “The Moth” episode was his band’s hit song: “You Are Everybody.” This makes me feel more like they’re all really dead except for Jack (or perhaps a less likely character) who is seeing everyone else in his head because that would be the anti-context of everything I’ve seen happen. That seems like something one’s subconscious would subtly plant to let you know you were in a dream or a fantasy. Only time will tell if my theory is correct.

I have one final theory, and this one may be far-fetched even I admit, but what if everyone on the island were former patients that had died on Jack’s or his father’s operating table, and his subconscious was now being confronted by them all at once because of his underlying guilt and shame that “he failed and didn’t have what it takes” to quote his father? Now that’s something I’d like to write about if it doesn’t turn out to be the truth! Until next week, don’t forget your sunscreen!

It’s so exciting to read your thoughts on this series as it unfolds. I loved this series so it’s nice to be reminded of the beginning. So much happens that it is hard to remember it all. Have fun!

So, the questions about Jack’s father and Adam & Eve get answered in Season 6. Along with the sickness (which doesn’t really come up again until Season 6). For as much flack the show got for not answering any questions, I think most of the ones you pose are answered (some sooner than others.)

Charlie and Sawyer were always my favorites. Along with another character that doesn’t come about until Season 2. Oh, and Hurley. Everyone loves Hurley.

I just watched the infamous Numbers episode everyone always talks about the other night, and now that I know more about Hurley, I like him all the more :)

Hi Kim! I love these posts! I just started my fourth rewatch, and every time I see an episode, I discover something new, but there are also aspects of the show I’m realizing I take for granted because I know what happens. It’s so nice to see the show again through your eyes. Thanks so much for sharing!

We’re actually working on a book about the LOST community, and we’d love to get your feedback. Even though you’re just starting the show, you should check out our survey for LOST fans: https://tinyurl.com/nobodydoesitalone.

Have fun watching! It’s the greatest show EVER!
