Quotation Marks – The West Wing edition

Season Four

“I think you’re getting back together.” — Sam
We’re not.” — Toby
But you want to.” — Sam
Yes.” — Toby
I think… Wait. What?” — Sam
See, sometimes if I slam on the brakes, you run right past.” — Toby
Okay, fill us in on everything you’ve got so far between the two of you.” — Josh
Yeah, that’s what’s going to happen right now.” — Toby

“Now, he’s going to throw a big word at you: “unfunded mandate.” He’s going to say if Washington lets the states do it, it’s an unfunded mandate. But what he doesn’t like is the federal government losing power. But I call it the ingenuity of the American people.” — Ritchie
President Bartlet, you have 60 seconds for a question and an answer.” — Moderator
“Well, first of all, let’s clear up a couple of things. “Unfunded mandate” is two words, not one big word.” — Bartlet

“Call and response isn’t going to work in front of a Joint Session. You’re alliteration happy: ‘guardians of gridlock,’ ‘protectors of privilege.’ I needed an avalanche of Advil. And when you use pop-culture references, your speech has a shelf life of twelve minutes. You don’t mind constructive criticism, do you?” — Toby
No, sir.” — Will
Anyway, thanks for coming in. I told Sam I can do this by myself.” — Toby
“Well, maybe he thought that your speeches were obscurantist policy tracts lost in a cul-de-sac of their own internal self-righteousness and groaning from the weight of statistics. I’m just speculating. I can’t say for sure.” — Will

“I didn’t realize babies come with hats.” — Toby

Season Five

“Sell me.” — Toby
“We had agreed to a one percent cut on a thirty-day continuing resolution, but the Speaker pulled a bait-and-switch.” — CJ
One percent, two percent … what’s so unreasonable about three percent?” — Toby
Three percent equals X dollars, which is Y flu vaccinations, Z school lunches … It’s more convincing with numbers.” — CJ

“My generation never got the future it was promised… Thirty-five years later, cars, air travel is exactly the same. We don’t even have the Concorde anymore. Technology stopped.” — Leo
The personal computer…” — Josh
A more efficient delivery system for gossip and pornography? Where’s my jet pack, my colonies on the Moon?” — Leo

“I’m sorry but can we really justify spending $800,000 on ‘A Bio-Cultural Approach to the Study of Female Sexual Fantasy and Genital Arousal’?” — Leo
How can we afford not to?” — Toby

Season Six

“[to Margaret] You’re an odd woman and I’ve never quite understood you. But you are extremely capable and you run this office like a Swiss watch. And you’re tall, which is reassuring. Leo may need you and if he does, that’s okay. But if he’s willing to part with you, I hope you’ll stay.” — CJ

[Bob Russell is] not stupid.” — Will
“That’s your bumper sticker?” — Josh

“[about a potential VP candidate] Do you want me to get the President to lean on him?” — Leo
“He told me that he’d kick the guy’s ass all over the school yard, if it came to that.” — Josh
“Who is it?” — Leo
You.” — Josh

Season Seven

“Who were you talking to?” — Babish
“My attorney’s voice mail.” — Toby
My instructions were that you sit quietly.” — Lawyer
I’m pretty sure I used my indoor voice.” — Toby

“Get some rest. I need you to look pretty for 20 million TV viewers.” — Josh
“If that’s what we’re counting on, the campaign is doomed.” — Leo (In the brilliant John Spencer’s final episode)

“Nobody ever talked Leo into doing anything he didn’t want to do. And he’d want you upstairs [in the campaign suite], not down here. You belong up there, it’s your night. He was so proud of you, Josh.” — Donna

“This guy is the real deal.” — Josh
“You said that last time.” — Sam [about Bartlet]
Yeah, and look how right I was.” — Josh

“Good morning Mr. President.” — Debbie
“Morning.” — Bartlet
How are you feeling this morning?” — Debbie
Unemployed.” — Bartlet
A lot of that going around the building.” — Debbie

Those were some of my favorites … Which ones did I miss?

You missed the one from Bartlet’s debate when the Republican was making fun of the federal government and Alaskan poetry and Bartlet then goes “The federal government gave Florida 20 billion dollars last year. I’m supposed to be asking you a question, so this is it, can we have that money back?”
