Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Ringer – More details, more awesomeness

More details about Ringer's pilot and concept make it sound like one of the best thrillers to hit television in a long time. Can Sarah Michelle Gellar do justice to her double role?

Last week, I wrote about the five things that would get me to watch Sarah Michelle Gellar’s new CBS show, Ringer. In reading Entertainment Weekly‘s exclusive interview with producer Peter Traugott, I’m finding new reasons I can’t wait to see this pilot.

They describe it as an edgy thriller and I automatically thought of my beloved Damages, one of the best thrillers ever to grace our screens. And apparently, so did the creators of Ringer, because as I read on, they compared it to that very show. They’ll be using flashbacks to tell the story of present time, very much the same way Damages does.

And it’s in that way that we’ll get to see Sarah Michelle Gellar play two roles, even though one of the twin sisters she plays dies early-on. Isn’t one of the best things about The Vampire Diaries seeing Nina Dobrev play Elena and Katherine? I’m thrilled to get the chance to see Buffy herself playing two roles. I love a show that really fleshes out the talent of its actors and the potential for SMG to shine is definitely here if the writing lives up to the concept.

Did it even cross anyone’s mind that SMG may not be able to fill the shows of such a complex role, two very different and layered characters? I’ll admit, I did for just a second because it’s been a while since she has really done anything amazing. No, The Grudge doesn’t count. And, when asked why SMG was perfect for the role, the producer kind of skirted around the answer by saying he’s a big fan of hers and is happy to see her back on TV. Um, where’s the love, Pete?

If acting is like riding a bike, she’ll be just fine. Shake off that dust, Sarah, and give it all you’ve got. Surely someone from Buffy — besides David Boreanaz — deserves a little success. So if we’re lucky, Ringer will be a great show that survives many seasons. Or, it will follow the Buffy alum curse that only David Boreanaz has seemed to break — sorry Joss and Tim. We’re always rooting for you, but still.

It’s safe to say that Allison Hannigan was able to successfully avoid the “Buffy Curse,” too.

What about Alyson Hannigan, she is a Buffy Alum, and How I met your Mother is doing great.
Also Anthony Head is doing fairly well on Merlin.

I guess I can grudgingly admit that Hannigan has probably done OK, too — I just loathe the character of Lily so it wasn’t on my screen! I wasn’t counting Head b/c he was successful before Buffy and isn’t even in this country. The core group who really got their start with Joss and co. were my focus.
