Ratings Clack – Music and dance boost Grey’s and Castle

Dancing with quasi-stars is still wildly popular, and able to boost cop shows that follow it, as 'Castle' and 'Body of Proof' will attest. There was music in the air for 'Grey's Anatomy' as well, with the show seeing its best numbers since the season premiere.

ABC - All things considered, last week was pretty nice for ABC. Secret Millionaire (10.63m/2.7) is holding up well on Sunday. And, of course, having Dancing With The Stars (22.77m/5.2) back on Monday is a huge bonus. Along with improving the 8-10 period, it also helped Castle (12.56m/3.2) to a season high. There was more good news Tuesday, as the DWTS recap (12.85m/2.8) and results (19.3m/4.3) made for huge gains over the usual No Ordinary Family and V numbers. That also led to a very solid premiere for Body of Proof (13.94m/3.1). It will be very interesting to see what that one does when it takes over the Desperate Housewives slot for a week.

Even better, that might not even be the best news of the week for the network. The big musical episode of Grey’s Anatomy (13.09m/4.9) brought the best numbers the show has seen since the premiere. In fact, that’s almost two million viewers and eight tenths in the demo over the average of the episodes since the premiere. The singing doctors were joined by the usual performances from Wipeout (6.38m/1.9) and Private Practice (7.35m/2.7).

It wasn’t all season bests and lofty gains though. Mr Sunshine (4.02m/1.4) and Off The Map (4.23m/1.3) were again left to their own devices on Wednesday, and again found lacking. It would appear that the writing is on the wall for both shows. The week finished with Shark Tank (4.8m/1.2) on Friday.

CBS - On the opposite end of the premiere scale we find Chaos (6.43m/1.1). Sure, it was a Friday premiere, but that’s still a horrible result. How horrible? How about 1.1 being the worst demo for any scripted show premiering this year. Yes, worse than Lone Star, and all of the CW premieres. Yikes. Fortunately, the network has plenty of other shows that are still doing just fine.

With a little help from the NCAA playoffs, Sunday was up across the board with Amazing Race (10.96m/3.2), Undercover Boss (11.87m/3.2), and CSI Miami (11.19m/2.7). Mad Love (5.54m/2.1) was flying solo on Monday, and didn’t do well without a little help from Ted. Things were much better Tuesday, where NCIS (18.73m/3.9) and NCIS LA (15.34m/3.5) barely noticed DWTS. The Good Wife (10.16m/1.9) wasn’t quite as successful. It looks like Body of Proof could be a problem there.

Wednesday started solid with Survivor (11m/3.1) and Criminal Minds (13.05m/2.5) and finished questionably with Suspect Behavior (9.53m/2.3). Thursday brought solid results for Big Bang Theory (11.92m/3.7), CSI (12.76m/2.9), and The Mentalist (14.27m/2.8). The iffy bit comes from the performance of Rules Of Engagement (8.25m/2.4), which is slipping further behind Bleep My Dad Says. Friday, CSI NY (10.26m/1.7) and Blue Bloods (10.69m/1.7) finished the week.

FOX - After an uneventful start to the week from The Simpsons (6.05m/2.8), Bob’s Burgers (4.65m/2.2), and American Dad (4.99m/2.5) things got quiet. Monday was all repeats, and Tuesday only offered a new Traffic Light (2.5m/1.1). As you would expect, things changed dramatically with American Idol on Wednesday (23.95m/7.9) and Thursday (22.63m/6.8). The network also managed a nice result for Mobbed (10.82m/3.8) in the Bones spot.

NBC - It was a rough week. After another disappointing Next Great Restaurant (3.67m/1.3), Celebrity Apprentice (8.58m/3) was the only show to reach 3 in the demo. Monday started slow with All Together Now (4.21m/.9) standing in for Chuck, and The Event (4.53m/1.2) didn’t help. Harry’s Law (8.54m/1.6) looked good by comparison, but did suffer from the boosted Castle. Tuesday found Biggest Loser (7.34m/2.7) a bit off the pace now that it is forced to face DWTS again. Parenthood (4.89m/1.9) remained steady, if unimpressive, at 10.

Wednesday, Minute To Win It (4.19m/1.2) continued to struggle, while SVU (8.54m/2.5) was a bright spot for at least managing a first in the demo against Suspect Behavior. Perfect Couples (2.05m/1) was flying solo on Thursday, and nearly fell below the 2 million viewer line. The week finished with Who Do You Think You Are (6.01m/1.3) falling just short of tripling the Perfect Couples viewer number.

CW - The dull march of spring continued with another week that only offered Next Top Model (2.18m/.9) and Shedding For The Wedding (.93m/.4).

CABLE - Business is picking up on the premium channels. And by business picking up I mean there are new episodes to watch, not that anyone is actually watching them. HBO added Mildred Pierce (1.27m/.3), while Showtime had the returns of Nurse Jackie (.61m/.2) and United States of Tara (.41m/.2). There was better news on the basic channels with the premiere of Secret Life of the American Teenager (3.32m/1.3) and the finale of The Game (4.43m/2.2).
