NBC’s Prime Suspect – CliqueClack Preview

All dicks and one Jane, indeed. 'Prime Suspect' looks to be a shining light in the glut of new programming coming our way.

You know who I miss?

Detective Lennie Brisco (Jerry Orbach) from Law & Order.

The dude had good snark. Understated snark. He had a wily way about him … unassuming some times, in your face other times. Not necessarily prone to irascibility, but still quick tempered every once in a while. He was one of the few detectives I found refreshing.

Well … guess what? I may have found my Lennie Brisco once again. And his name — ‘scuse me, her name — is Jane Timony (Maria Bello).

I enjoy the occasional police procedural, but I find myself asking year after year: Do we really need another one? (The answer to that question is a resounding “No!”) But … every so often, one comes around I find intriguing. Prime Suspect just might be that one.

Maria Bello takes the Lennie Brisco attitude and ramps it up. If the pilot is any indication of things to come, I think I’ll be in for a good ride.

This Prime Suspect is the re-imagining of the hit UK series starring Helen Mirren. I’ven’t seen that series, but the premise of this new series is similar to what has come before: A lone brilliant female in the midst of a bunch of motorhead detectives who think she’s not up to snuff. And, like that previous incarnation, the guys in Timony’s department have another thing coming.

I’m looking forward to this new police drama. Spiffy cast, too, with Aidan Quinn and Kirk Acevedo (Oz, Band Of Brothers) among others. Let’s see where it goes.

I liked this when it was called The Closer.

But seriously folks …

Maria Bello is enough to get a couple episode look for me, but I don’t need another procedural on my DVR.

. . . . .

Just for a moment, Ivey, I was considering calling you out as a “mellow harsher” …

… but fortunately I caught your “But seriously folks …”
