Rookie Blue – Andy is back in town

ABC's hit summer drama 'Rookie Blue' returns with a television legend as a guest star. But it's the main characters we're most excited to see back, right?

- Season 3, Episode 1 - "The First Day of the Rest of Your Life"

I don’t know about you, but I’m really excited Rookie Blue is back. I can’t speak for Aryeh, who didn’t even know the show was still on. When last we checked in with 15 Division, Andy and Swarek had finally gotten together, but their relationship cost them both a suspension. Sadly, Luke didn’t find a way to get shot (again), but Epstein and Diaz had finally made nice. And Noel was pregnant. You can trust me, we’re going to get back to that.

I’m generally a fan when shows do time-jumps, and it worked well here allowing Andy’s suspension to have a real impact, without the audience having to watch her sit on the couch for six months – or white water rafting and sky diving. It was good to see her and Swarek pick up where the left off. I’m looking forward to the show exploring their relationship, even if it means workplace dating.

I feel pretty stupid for having to ask this, but I’m well accustomed to asking stupid questions. The father of Noel’s child is Frank, right? I wasn’t imagining that? So it’s OK for their relationship to extend (well) past work, but Andy gets sent away for three months? That’s not how things are supposed to work, right? And while Noel might not appreciate her new role as one of the faces of the Division, that move smacks of nepotism — though her line about being as pretty as Diaz was great.

My hatred dislike of Luke was well established last year, but I think he deserved more than a throwaway line to explain his departure – Eric Johnson isn’t included in the cast photos, but I hadn’t heard anything about him leaving. Hopefully, this means that the relationship between he and Peck that was hinted that last season was tossed out with the bathwater as well. Though I’m even less of a fan of her ex as the newest rookie; it just seems a little too convenient.

I’d best save this particular rant for later in the season when the storyline actually evolves, but I’m solidly against Nash going after a detective position. I have no clue how this type of career advancement works – either in US police departments or their Canadian counterparts – but this just seems way to fast to be plausible. And if anyone was far enough along to jump ahead, wouldn’t it be Peck?

Notes & Quotes

  • Swarek with the dummy sign at the airport was classic.
  • “Any baggage?” – Swarek
“No. [Swarek stops walking] Yeah.” – Andy

In answer to your questions, yes, I think Frank is the sperm donor for Noel’s baby. I don’t know whether they are in a relationship yet though. I don’t think picking her to be the public face of the police is nepotism but instead good p.r. Diaz symbolizes the hunky young Hispanic guy; Noel represents the older woman of colour (as we say in Canada) who worked her way up to a responsible position.

Peck is no further ahead than Nash in her career, they both started at the same time. Peck has always struck me as someone who joined the police force because it was expected of her while the older Nash is someone who chose it as a career because that’s what she wanted from her life.

Since I completely loathe loathe the Swarek and Andy relationship because he was too close to abusive for me and the show is making them all angst and plot contrivance (the suspensions), I probably won’t watch this year as much as I have in the past. As much as I liked the actor on Forever Knight, I dislike his character here. I’m not a big fan of Andy either, I prefer Nash or Noel.

In contrast, personally I like Luke. He was the one who was supportive of Andy in season 1 when Swarek was being an ass and that means more to me than Swarek being the obvious love interest. Yes, he screwed up big time over his old girlfriend but Andy was already emotionally cheating on him with Swarek.

Noelle and Frank were, and probably still are dating. Frank wanted Noelle to keep him company during the quarantine. We’ve seen them kiss at least twice. Once after Noelle mentioned that they hadn’t even kissed yet even though he’d treated her to fancy dinners several weeks in row. The other time when she told him she was pregnant in the Season 2 finale.

I thought Frank choose Noelle to be the face of 15 because every minute she was in front of the camera was a minute his child was safe rather than for the diversity reason Noelle gave Diaz. Noelle didn’t seem too happy to be the face of 15. He made the choice for himself, not to show favoritism to his girlfriend. Although that is problematic, too.

As far as the double standard of Andy/Sam getting in trouble while Noelle/Frank get a pass, it seemed like the problem was that Andy and Sam jeopardized the undercover operation not that they were colleagues that dated. Also before Frank started dating Noelle, he suggested that she apply for a Sergeant position in another division/unit. So maybe he thought about the problems of dating a subordinate, too.
