Duets does party songs

"Party Songs" was the theme this week on 'Duets.' And I'd only let a few be played at my bash. See which ones I chose, and if you agree. See as well, why the wrong contestant went home and for what reason.

- Season 1, Episode 4 - "Party Songs"

A good performance by Meleana Brown (coached by John Legend) wasn’t enough to save her from being rejected from Duets this week. And that, my friends is an unfair crying shame.

The only reason that the “superstar” coaches voted to keep Olivia and not Meleana was simple. It would leave coach Robin Thicke with no more contestants. Since Alexis was let go in the first elimination, they couldn’t possibly send home Robin’s only other hopeful without making him look like the fool he is. So? Call it a professional courtesy that Olivia sees another show, despite the fact that she clearly lost the sing off. And that made my prediction of Robin sitting like an alone cheese not come to fruition.

I stand by my original thoughts though. Both of his picks should be history.

As it is, we move forward with John Legend and Robin being down to one duet partner each. I think it’s great how Kelly Clarkson’s choices (Jason and Jordan) keep taking her advice and growing every week to climb that ridiculous “chart” that we get to see for a tenth of a millisecond after each round.

I’ll rest much easier with this show in a couple more weeks when “America” steps in and votes on the live shows.

John still has a big contender in Bridget Carrington. She’s just a natural, who can tackle any genre and come out swinging. My prediction is that she’ll come down to it with Jennifer Nettle’s main guy J Rome. And I say that not for anything Jennifer does as a coach. If you’ve read any of my past reviews, you know that I like her about as much as that part of a teeth cleaning where they take that sharp thing out and dig at your gums.

J Rome is just a very seasoned and talented singer. Nothing to do with her, except she picked him out at auditions. Which wouldn’t be that hard to do, in my opinion.

As for which of these “party songs” showcased tonight that you would have heard at one of my shindigs? Only two. I didn’t mind The Stone’s “Satisfaction” done by Kelly and her protege Jason. Nor did I become nauseous while listening to J-Rome (yes impersonating Michael Jackson) and Jennifer Nettles doing “P.Y.T.” (Although Jennifer repeatedly sang “pretty young thang.”) That just happens to be one of my go to feeling happy tunes.

The rest were just “Meh.” Kelly is going to have to watch it in upcoming weeks. She’s just so damn good that even semi trying to hold back? She outshines her people dramatically. Could become a problem for her team.

What did you think of tonight’s offerings? Are you still liking Duets?
