How I Met Your Mother – Katy Perry and the sweetest non declaration of love

Katy Perry joins the cast of 'HIMYM' as Zoey's cousin, set up on a date with Ted. But does the night end like anyone expected? I doubt it.

- Season 6, Episode 15 - "Oh Honey"

When you think of stunt casting and How I Met Your Mother, your thoughts likely turn to Britney Spears (Though, I’m apt to remember Danica McKeller first, but that is just me). In her turn tonight as Zoey’s cousin, Katy Perry’s character could have easily been mistaken for Spears’ Abby. In the same way that Abby marked the beginning of the Stella era, Honey (Or whatever her name is) ushers in the official beginning of Zoey. And it is about time.

HIMYM has nailed getting to the true core and sentiments of its characters all season long. From Lily’s devastated reaction to telling Marshall about his father, to Barney’s (albeit comedic) emotions relating to the search for his father, the show has gotten it right every time. The more cynical amongst us might call tonight’s moment clichéd, but Zoey and Ted’s scene in the hallway was kinda beautiful (Yeah, tell me where you’ve seen two people told they were in love with each other from their friend calling on the phone from Minnesota?). I have been growing more and more concerned about how Ted and Zoey would eventually get together in light of her marriage, but the storyline played out brilliantly. Having her and the Captain separate off screen, and not as some reaction to a potential affair was, in reflection, the only way to make it work.

Unfortunately, it might just be another brick in the “Zoey’s not the mother” pile. Zoey, the mother of lore, has a cousin whose name no one remembers? I’m sure most people can’t name all of their spouses’ cousins, but again Honey” is different because she was unintentionally the one that finally got these two crazy kids together.

I hope not though. Seeing the running joke about the ketchup was the first time I’ve seen Ted click with someone that well since, honestly, Victoria (Yes, that means skipping Robin). Can Zoey actually be the mother? The only real obstacle is finding a way to make her Cindy’s roommate, which is as simple as “the Captain and I were having problems, and I was staying with my childhood friend/sorority sister/random girl while we worked things out.” Then, make Zoey’s divorce become final the day of the season premiere’s mystery wedding, and thus have a “new name” and boom, all of the sitcom justification you need.

It is funny how much I’ve turned around on a potential Zoey and Ted pairing in just sixteen episodes. They belong together. A guy can hope, right?

Notes & Quotes

  • Anyone catch the Loch Ness poster in Marshall’s bedroom?
  • “So are we ever going to see you again because if I recall correctly you owe me a date with your hot cousin.” – Ted
“You still want to do that?” – Zoey
“Yes, and we miss you … But the cousin thing mostly, let’s get that going.” – Ted
  • “She is a lovely person … warm, intelligent … Just kind of gullible. It’s like every word out of her mouth makes you want to go, ‘Oh … honey.’” – Robin
“Interesting. Show your work.” – Marshall
“My apartment building is so safe … My landlord he even installed a security camera in my shower.” – Honey
“Maybe I should feel weird about giving my social security number to a complete stranger, but the guy’s a Nigerian prince.” – Honey
“I just had a great TV audition. Behind the KFC where the executive producer works on the weekends … Long story short, I’m going to be on Lost!” – Honey
  • INTERVENTION!!!
  • “I’m up on burners, playa. Too many crazies have my old numbers, so now I’m all about disposable cell phones.  I’ll use one for a while, have my fun, then dump it and get a new one. Then I’ll do the same with my phone.” – Barney
  • “Hey, I was in the neighborhood and I thought I’d take you up on that beer you’re about to offer me.” – Zoey
“Would you like a beer?” – Ted
“Oh, Ted … I’m so busy. But I guess I have time for one! Lead the way.” – Zoey
  • Marshall’s Clue analogy was perfect when the Captain was Colonel Mustard.

Wouldn’t Zooey also have had to be at Ted’s first lecture at Columbia? Wasn’t that mentioned earlier? I still think it could work, it would have to be something along the lines of “She stopped in briefly before leaving” or something.

I think the big ones are:

– Being at that lecture
– Being Cindy’s roommate
– Everyone forgetting her cousin’s name

Considering how unreliable of a narrator “Old Ted” has been over the years, I see no problems with any of those getting explained away awkwardly :)

I wonder how Robin managed to burn the food when Celsius has a lower scale than Fahrenheit. The boiling point in deg C is 100, in Fahrenheit it’s 212 °F.

I love it when show’s insult my intelligence.

Or just went for a Canada joke without thinking it all the way through.

Made me giggle even if the math didn’t work right.

Yeah I am predisposed because I live in a Centigrade country and freaked when I first heard that normal bodytemp is around 100 Fahrenheit so even with a laugh track I instantly knew that that joke was just wrong.

The rest of the episode was very funny though :-)

I live in Canada and my stove is still in Fahrenheit, but my thermostat and the weather are in Celsius. It gets confusing sometimes when cookbooks switch between F/C and mL/g/oz. Why don’t you stubborn fools switch to a civilized system already?

And Don’t forget the Yellow Umbrella.

Did anyone else notice that when Barney runs into Zoey on his way to work, he has a metal suitcase handcuffed to his arm?
